Account book, 1828-1843.

Contains credits and debits for blacksmithing work, including a lot of horseshoeing; as well as repairing wagons; mending tools; making pot hooks; repairing handcuffs, fetters and locks at the county jail; repairing hay scales; making cranks; sharpening drills; and other similar work. Payments were made with foodstuffs, coal, bushels of hard wood, labor, cloth, hauling, and in other ways, including--rarely--by cash. Laid in at front is a manuscript note reading like a newspaper advertisement for blacksmith work "At the stone shop in Alfred oposit the jail house."

James Griffin was a blacksmith in Alfred, York County, ME during the early 1800s.
